Madeline Barnard Professor Coffey HS/102/01 September 20, 2016 European Witch Hunts The European witch-hunt lasted for sixty years causing constant turmoil throughout Europe. Due to the constant tension, women started to be accused of witchcraft. Religious conviction and science caused many questions to appear, as people started to panic about the alleged "witches". From 1570 to 1630 women were being targeted for witchcraft. Most people believed these women were witches because of their sex, their economic or social status, or because they were considered vulnerable. Due to the fact vulnerable women were thought to lack power and family support, they were common targets of the accusers. The women that were targeted also were "usually impoverished" (Hoak 1271). Also, Europe during this time period was war stricken and was facing a social upheaval, so resources were very scarce. This is how witch hunters justified their actions of eliminating "witches". People believed that these helpless women wanted more power to control their enemies and that's why they participated in witchcraft. I believe that that the socioeconomic conditions of this time period had a tremendous impact on the witch craze. For example, there was a lack of resources, which made life a challenge for the "witches" but their accusers as well. The accuser had no problem killing off "witches" due to the socioeconomic issues. Additionally, I feel as though the Scientific Revolution and the Reformation both played a major part in the witch craze. For instance, the Reformation made people feel as though god was not present in everyday life. As seen in the textbook on page 49, Protestants thought, " the symbols and rituals have provided a sense of protection" (text) were missing. As more questions arose about science people began to question everyday life and the unknown. Which contributed to the witch-hunt, craze and caused many questions to arise. I think that because everyone was questioning science they needed something to believe and that's were witches came in. By attempting to reconcile religious conviction with science it brought on the witch-hunts. I strongly agree with Dale Hoak's assessment of the witch craze because witch hunting appears to have been a socially destructive by product of the European transition to modernity.

The insurance would have made the customer pay about fifty dollars a month out of theyre hard-earned money whether they were going to use it or not, for medical treatment. Still, the insurance did not cover all of the expenses even though the customer is shelling out thousands of dollars, sometimes for nothing. It is just another way for a large insurance business to make people believe that they need to insure their own health, like they were a possession or an item. If one is into games then there are demos for most computer games, or you could even play chess with someone overseas. I have downloaded nearly 400 songs from the Internet, and it was all free and legal. If one does not have t ime to go shopping for Christmas there are millions of online stores for any type of gift; there are even online grocery stores. One can search huge databases of used or new cars until they find the one that is right for them. There are also thousands of classified adds to search through if the item one is looking for cannot be bought new or is discontinued. There are even online auctions where one can conveniently buy or sell new or used items. One can even pay their bills online. Of course if one wants to look into a product before they purchase it there are discussion forums on nearly every item. For the business man there are sites to buy, sell, research, or get quotes on one's stocks. All the top news groups have web sites, and there are even weather sites.

For over a decade, the rapid advancement in information and communication technology has significantly affected the banking industry. The banking sector has embraced the use of technology to serve its client’s faster and also to do more with less. Emerging technologies have changed the banking industry from paper and branch based banks to â€Å"digitized and networked banking services†. Unlike before, broadband internet is cheap and it makes the transfer of data easy and first. Technology has changed the accounting and management system of all banks. And it is now changing the way how banks are delivering services to their customers. However this technology comes at a cost, implementing all this technology has been expensive but the rewards are limitless. The banking sector was one of the first to embrace rapid globalization and benefit significantly from IT development. Present Status: A good number of technology driven services are provided to the customers by the Private Commercial Banks (PCBs), Foreign Commercial Banks (FCBs)and Nationalized Commercial Banks (NCBs). The FCBs operating in Bangladesh like Standard Chartered Bank and HSBCare the pioneers to introduce technology driven banking facilities. Thesebanks provide services like ATM, debit card, credit card, Point of Sale (POS)services, internet banking, phone banking, any branch banking, ElectronicFund Transfer (EFT). Along with these services Standard Chartered Bank isproviding KIOSK service to its customers. Among the local banks, the PCBs are ahead of the NCBs in providingtechnology driven banking services. A limited number of technology drivenservices are being provided by the private Islamic banks in Bangladesh. For sending foreign remittance NCBs and some PCBs are working collaboratively with mobile phone service operators. Application of computer based services in Bangladesh: Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT), SWIFT and MICR cheque are being provided by all the banks. All the banks except Uttara Bank are providing any branch banking to the customers. All banks have debit card facilities for their clients except Citi Bank NA. Gerunds, Participles, and Infinitives Explained A verbal  is a word derived from a  verb  that functions in a sentence as a  noun  or  modifier  rather than as a verb. In other words, a verbal  is a verb that acts like a different part of speech. Verbals include  infinitives,  gerunds  (also known as  -ing  forms), and  participles  (also known as  -ing  forms  and  -en  forms). A word group based on a verbal is called a  verbal phrase. Each of these verbals is often part of a phrase, which includes related modifiers, objects, and  complements. What Are Participles? A participle is a verb form that can be used as an adjective to modify nouns and pronouns, as in this example: The children, crying and exhausted, were guided out of the collapsed house. Crying is a present participle, formed by adding -ing to the present form of the verb (cry). Exhausted is a past participle, formed by adding -ed to the present form of the verb (exhaust). Both participles modify the subject, children. All present participles end in -ing. The past participles of all regular verbs end in -ed. Irregular verbs, however, have various past participle endings- for instance, thrown,  ridden, built, and gone. A participial phrase is made up of a participle and its modifiers. A participle may be followed by an object, an adverb, a prepositional phrase, an adverb clause, or any combination of these. For example, in the following sentence the participial phrase consists of a present participle (holding), an object (the torch), and an adverb (steadily): Holding the torch steadily, Jenny approached the monster. In the next sentence, the participial phrase consists of a present participle (making), an object (a great ring), and a prepositional phrase (of white light): Jenny waved the torch over her head, making a great ring of white light. What Are Gerunds? A gerund is a verb form ending in -ing that functions in a sentence as a noun. Although both the present participle and the gerund are formed by adding -ing to a verb, the participle does the job of an adjective while the gerund does the job of a noun. In the first sentence, the gerund crying serves as the direct object. In the second sentence, the infinitive to cry performs the same function. Roosevelt In 1929, President Herbert Hoover declared, with confidence, that, "We in America today is nearer to the final triumph over poverty than ever before in the history of any land."1 The decade of the 1920s was one of unbounded prosperity and optimism. The stock market was up, credit buying was at an all-time high; cars, radio, television and jazz were popular. All this brought major changes to the American way of life. Then, without warning, the stock market crashes. The 29th day of October marked the end of the Jazz Age and the beginning of the Great Depression. Industrial and farm production dropped rapidly and unemployment rose from 4 million to 8 million to 12 million between 1930 and 1932! The jobless lived as drifters in small cities of tin huts known as "Hoovervilles." Banks closed down as everyone withdrew all of their money out of fear of losing it. People were in bread lines that spanned many blocks while once successful businessmen sold fruit on street corners. The systems had failed and the people lost trust in their government. A cold March day brought on the close of every bank at noon. All the president had to say was, "We are at the end of our string."2 In March of 1933, the people decided to elect a 51-year old man named Franklin Delanor Roosevelt. He had assured the people he had a way to fight the depression that had engulfed the country, he brought them "The New Deal." Making good on his pledge for action, FDR enacted the first phase of his plan which included getting the banks back on their feet and fixing the economic and social disaster created by the crash. He gave jobs to the unemployed through the Public Works and Works Progress Administrations. And the National Recovery and Agricultural Adjustment Administrations were used to reopen businesses and put farmers back into production. To the American people, he truly gave them "a New Deal." On the other hand, when the German economy collapsed in the beginning of the 1930s, people began to see Hitler's propositions with a more open mind. The depression spread through the country as inflation, which was created by wiping out savings, had thrown many of the middle classes down into the poverty level. Many civil servants and small shopkeepers were swindled out of their life's savings by clever, fast-talking salesmen. These people were the ones looking to Hitler for salvation from their problems. Hitler ascribed all of the present suffering to the Jews. He propagated that the Russian Jews were responsible for the corruption in the government, Western Jews were responsible for the inflation and the German Jews were profiting from all of the suffering. 'The Jews are our misfortune,' was a common cry in the German National Socialist Workers' Party. In January of 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed to the position of Chancellor by President von Hindenberg in hopes of recreating their crippled economy. By July he had reconstructed the government to his liking, sending any opponents to concentration camps. He created the Enabling Act, which gave him unlimited dictatorial power, in March. In August of 1934, von Hindenberg passed away and Hitler announced his own presidency for life. In the early days of Hitler's regime, he relied on the industrialists and on their political representatives, the German National Party. Soon enough, though, Hitler began to ignore what the German National Party had to say and then finally expelled them completely from the government. There was on room for Hitler in Hitler's new state. With the new government came a strong need for military rearmament, which, in turn, eliminated nearly all unemployment as the industry exploded. The liquidating of Jewish businesses allowed non-Jewish companies to prosper greatly. He eventually eliminated all of his enemies, sent all Jews to concentration camps and then led Germany into World War II. In the 1930s, these two political leaders, Adolf Hitler and Franklin D. Roosevelt, were each facing the same economic crises at the same time. Although both of the leaders spoke to their people about saving the country from economic disaster, we can see the contrast in their actions and the prosperity of their countries.
